The honest breakdown: what does a cheap private plate actually cost?

We're going to be straight with you, because the industry isn't always.

What you pay Yellowhite: from £50 for the registration itself.

What you pay the DVLA: £80. This is a mandatory government fee that applies whenever a registration is assigned to a vehicle. It is charged by every single dealer in the UK — some just bury it until checkout.

Total minimum cost to put a plate on your car: £50 + £80 = £130.

One exception: if you're buying the plate as a gift or to hold as an investment on a retention certificate, you don't pay the DVLA fee at all. You just pay the £50 plate price and sit on it until you're ready to use it.

What private plates are available under £50?

At the under £50 price point, you're looking at:

Current style plates — the modern AA00 AAA format. Combinations with common initials, popular two-letter sequences, or specific number patterns come up regularly at this price. They won't spell your name outright, but many make for a genuinely personal plate.

Some prefix plates — the 1983–2001 format. Less common under £50 but they do appear, particularly combinations with less popular area codes or year letters.

Northern Irish plates — often the best value in this bracket. They include an I or Z, carry no age identifier (so they go on any vehicle), and some combinations are available from £50. Great for names containing those letters.

What you're unlikely to find under £50: dateless cherished plates, short combinations (under 5 characters), or anything with broad name appeal. Those command higher prices because more people want them.

Is a £50 private plate worth buying?

That depends on what you want from it.

If you want something personal to display on your car and you're not fussed about it spelling something obvious — yes, absolutely. A private registration at any price point is still a legitimate, unique registration number that no one else can display. The plate you get made up looks identical to any other private plate on the road.

If you're looking for an investment, plates under £50 are unlikely to appreciate significantly — there's a reason they're cheap. Plates with investment potential tend to be short, dateless, or contain popular names, which puts them well above this price range.

Frequently asked questions.

Yes. Every plate on Yellowhite is a legitimate DVLA registration. The price reflects market demand — nothing else. A £50 plate is fully legal, fully transferable, and just as real as a £50,000 one.

The DVLA fee is £80 — there is no VAT on top of that. VAT may apply to the plate price itself on some registrations depending on the type. This is always shown clearly before you pay.

Almost certainly yes — with one DVLA rule: the registration cannot make your vehicle appear newer than it is. Use our age filter to check compatibility. Northern Irish plates in this bracket can go on any vehicle, any age.

You can. Once you've purchased, you'll receive a V750 Certificate of Entitlement and can manage the DVLA transfer directly at gov.uk. You'll still pay the £80 DVLA fee — that goes to the government, not to us.

Yes — you don't need to assign it to a vehicle immediately. Buy it, hold the certificate, and gift it. No DVLA fee until it's assigned.
