What's the total cost of a cheap private number plate?

We believe in showing you the full picture upfront — no surprises at checkout. Every private number plate purchase involves two separate costs:

The plate price — this is what you pay Yellowhite for the registration itself. Our cheap plates start from £50.

The DVLA transfer fee — this is a mandatory government fee of £80 paid directly to the DVLA whenever a registration is assigned to a vehicle. Every dealer charges this, whether they show it upfront or not.

So the minimum total cost of a private plate at Yellowhite is £50 (plate) + £80 (DVLA fee) = £130 all in — still cheaper than starting prices at most major dealers once their own DVLA fee is added.

You only pay the DVLA fee if you're assigning the plate to a vehicle. If you're buying to hold on a retention certificate — as a gift or an investment — you pay the plate price only.

Why are Yellowhite's plates cheaper?

We're a lean operation — no call centres, no sales teams on commission, no expensive high street showrooms. That keeps our overheads low and our prices competitive.

We also don't inflate the plate price to subsidise 'free' services elsewhere. Our transfer service is priced separately and transparently. What you see is what you pay.

A few other things worth knowing:

  • We're a DVLA registered dealer. Every registration we sell is legitimate, properly documented and fully transferable. Cheap doesn't mean dodgy.
  • 71 million plates in our database. More choice means more chances to find something affordable that still feels personal.
  • No pressure, no upsells. Search, find, buy. If you want help with the transfer, we offer a managed service. If you don't, you handle it yourself via the DVLA directly.

What kinds of cheap private plates are available?

The cheapest private plates tend to fall into a few categories:

Current style plates — the standard AA00 AAA format. Modern combinations with popular initials or numbers can be found for under £50. Less personalised-looking than older formats, but legitimate private registrations.

Prefix plates (1983–2001) — a year letter followed by numbers and area letters. Good for matching an older vehicle's age, and often very affordable.

Suffix plates (1963–1983) — the classic format. Cheaper combinations are available for under £100 and still carry that vintage appeal.

Northern Irish plates — these contain an I or Z and carry no age identifier, meaning they can go on any vehicle regardless of how old it is. Often among the cheapest available and hugely flexible.

Dateless (cherished) plates tend to cost more and are less common in the cheap bracket, but short combinations do occasionally appear at lower prices.

Frequently asked questions.

Yes. Every registration on Yellowhite is a legitimate DVLA registration. Price reflects market demand for a particular combination — not quality or legality. A £50 plate is just as legal as a £50,000 one.

No — the DVLA fee of £80 is separate and mandatory whenever you assign a plate to a vehicle. We show this clearly at checkout. You don't pay it if you're buying to hold on retention. The DVLA fee is £80 — there is no VAT on top of that. VAT may apply to the plate price itself on some registrations depending on the type. This is always shown clearly before you pay.

Almost any vehicle, with one rule: the plate cannot make your car appear newer than it is. Use our age filter when searching to only show compatible registrations for your vehicle. Dateless and Northern Irish plates are exempt from this rule.

Once you've purchased, if you're using our managed transfer service the DVLA process takes 7–10 working days on average. If you're handling the DVLA paperwork yourself, timelines vary. You'll receive your certificate of entitlement (V750) by post.

Possibly — but factor in the DVLA fee everywhere. A dealer advertising "from £29" still charges £80 on top. Our total costs remain among the lowest in the UK once all fees are included.

Some plates appreciate in value — typically those with broad appeal, popular names or short combinations. A £50 plate is unlikely to become a gold mine, but it's not impossible. We'd encourage buying something you love first, and treating any future value as a bonus.
