Retain a number plate.

Decoding the Docs

Sometimes the perfect private number plate comes along before you’re ready to attach it to a vehicle. Whether you’re waiting for that special car or considering it as an investment, retaining a registration plate is a smart move. Here’s how you can secure and maintain your ideal plate until you’re ready to showcase it.

V750 Certificate of Entitlement.

When you find that perfect plate on Yellowhite, purchasing it gives you immediate entitlement. With each purchase, we arrange the V750 Certificate of Entitlement for brand new registrations that have never been registered.

Yip, the V750 is issued when a private number has never been assigned to a vehicle. It signifies your right to assign the registration to a vehicle registered in your name or nominate someone else to use it.

This certificate proves your right to the registration number and is valid for 10 years. You can use it anytime within this period to assign the number to a vehicle.

V778 Retention Document.

Not ready to assign your new plate right away or thinking about switching it between vehicles? That’s where the V778 Retention Document comes into play.

We’ll arrange one of these if you purchase a previously owned private plate through us.

The V778, which is also valid for 10 years, is used to retain a registration number after it’s been removed from a vehicle.

It’s ideal if you wish to keep the number without immediately assigning it to another vehicle, often used by those who change cars frequently but wish to keep their distinctive plate.

Differences between V750 and V778.

  • V750 Certificate of Entitlement is issued for new registrations that haven’t been assigned to a vehicle.
  • V778 Retention Document is for holding a registration that has previously been assigned to a vehicle but is now being held for future use.

If the decade is up and you’re still not ready to use your private number, don’t worry. Renewing your V750 or V778 is straightforward and free of charge through the DVLA, allowing you another 10 years to decide.

Investing in personalised plates.

Thinking of private plates as an investment? New registrations often gain value over time. Buying plates upon release from Yellowhite can be a savvy investment strategy. Hold onto them, watch their value grow, and consider selling them on our platform when their demand increases.
