How to sell a personalised number plate.

Get it listed on Yellowhite for FREE

Looking to sell your private number plate? Whether you’ve upgraded your car, changed your name, or just fancy cashing in on your investment, we’ve made it easier than ever to get your plate seen by thousands of potential buyers, completely free of charge.

Step 01
Value your private plate.

Before listing your plate for sale, it’s a good idea to get a feel for its potential value. Some plates are worth hundreds, others, thousands. Here’s how to make an informed estimate:

Search Yellowhite for Similar Plates

  1. Search Yellowhite for similar plates to see what others are listing
  2. Consider the style (dateless plates often fetch more), word resemblance, or name relevance
  3. Think about the original cost or any previous valuations

You set your price — and that’s exactly what you’ll receive if it sells. We simply add a small listing margin on top when we list it publicly. Therefore, there are no fees taken from you, no hidden charges for your buyers, and you always get what you ask for.

You stay in control — and we take care of the rest.

Step 02
List it on Yellowhite (for FREE!)

This is the easiest bit. Head to our Sell Your Plate page and or complete this short form with:

  • Your registration number
  • The price you’re looking for
  • Your contact details (so we can reach you when there’s interest)

Once submitted, we’ll review your listing and may ask you for a quick photo or scan of one of the following:

  • V750 (Certificate of Entitlement – for unassigned plates)
  • V778 (Retention Document – for plates not currently on a vehicle)
  • V5C (Log book – if the plate is currently on your car)

List your registration.

Please ensure that if you are a business or VAT registered, that your price includes VAT.

Got a question that’s not on this page? Our friendly and dedicated team is ready to assist with personalised support.

What if I don’t have a certificate?

No worries! If your private number plate is currently on your car and you only have the V5C (log book), you can move the plate onto a retention certificate (V778) using the DVLA.

This protects your plate and makes selling easier.

How to move your plate from a car to a certificate:

  1. Go to the DVLA online service: Take a private number off a vehicle – GOV.UK
  2. Enter your registration and log book (V5C) details
  3. Pay the £80 DVLA Transfer fee
  4. Within a few days, you’ll receive:
    • A new V778 retention certificate
    • An updated V5C for your vehicle with a new standard registration

Once you have your V778, you’re ready to sell or assign your plate anytime.

Step 03
We promote your private plate for you.

Once your plate is live on Yellowhite, we:

  1. Market it across our platform, email lists, and search listings
  2. Showcase it alongside trending and in-demand registrations
  3. Handle enquiries from interested buyers on your behalf

And all of this? Still free.

Step 04
Secure the sale & transfer.

When a buyer’s ready, we’ll:

  • Contact you directly to confirm the sale
  • Guide both parties through the transfer process
  • Help ensure smooth completion via DVLA (we can even handle this part for you)
