How to sell a personalised number plate.

Get your plate listed on Yellowhite for free. Reach thousands of buyers actively searching for private registrations.

Looking to sell your private number plate? Whether you've upgraded your car, changed your name, or just fancy cashing in on your investment, we've put together a step-by-step guide to walk you through the full process — from understanding valuations to completing a secure transfer via DVLA.

How to sell your plate.

1

Value your private plate

Before listing your plate for sale, get a feel for its potential value. Search Yellowhite for similar plates to see what others are listing, consider the style (dateless plates often fetch more), word resemblance or name relevance. You set your price — and that's exactly what you'll receive if it sells. We simply add a small listing margin on top. No fees taken from you, no hidden charges, and you always get what you ask for.

2

List it on Yellowhite for free

Once you've valued your plate, list it with Yellowhite. We'll ask for a few basic details including your registration number, the price you're looking for and your contact details. We may ask for a quick photo or scan of your V750 (Certificate of Entitlement), V778 (Retention Document) or V5C (logbook). Don't have a certificate? If the plate is on your car, you can move it onto a retention certificate via the DVLA online service for £80.

3

We promote your plate for you

Once your plate is live on Yellowhite, we market it across our platform, email lists and search listings, showcase it alongside trending and in-demand registrations, and handle enquiries from interested buyers on your behalf. And all of this is still free.

4

Secure the sale and transfer

When a buyer is ready, we contact you directly to confirm the sale, guide both parties through the transfer process and help ensure smooth completion via DVLA. We can even handle this part for you.
