Understanding Age Identifiers
We've seen four styles of number plates in circulation since they were introduced in 1903. With the majority of plates on our roads being Suffix, Prefix or Current style, the age identifiers can be simple once you know what to look for.
Suffix style number plates
Issued 1963–1982. The last letter indicates the year of registration. View the suffix age chart →
Prefix style number plates
Issued 1983–2001. The first letter indicates the year of registration. View the prefix age chart →
Current style number plates
Issued 2001–present. The two-digit number in positions 3–4 indicates the half-year period. View the current style age chart →

What is a Dateless Number Plate?
Before 1963, number plates did not have an age identifier, hence why we now call them dateless (or cherished) number plates. Dateless plates can be legally assigned to vehicles of any age — offering a timeless appeal and added privacy.
