What are cherished number plates?

Cherished number plates — also known as dateless registrations — are the oldest and most prestigious private number plates available in the UK. Issued before 1963, these registrations carry no age identifier whatsoever, which means they can be legally assigned to any vehicle regardless of its year of manufacture. This single characteristic is what makes them so desirable and so valuable.

The format of a cherished plate is beautifully simple. They consist of between one and four characters — a combination of letters and numbers — without the year-linked prefixes or suffixes found on later registrations. Think of iconic plates like A 1, S 5 or JB 007. The shorter the plate, the rarer and more valuable it tends to be.

Because cherished plates were issued in a finite batch by local councils decades ago, no new ones will ever be created. The total supply is fixed and can only shrink over time as plates are lost or destroyed. This absolute scarcity is the foundation of their enduring value — and their appeal to collectors, investors and anyone who appreciates something genuinely rare.

Unlike current-style registrations that reveal a vehicle's age at a glance, a dateless plate gives nothing away. A brand-new Range Rover wearing a two-character plate looks just as natural as a classic Jaguar. That versatility, combined with their heritage, is why cherished plates remain the gold standard of the private registration market.

Why cherished plates hold their value

Absolute scarcity

Every cherished plate was issued before 1963 and the supply is permanently fixed. No government, dealer or manufacturer can create new ones. As plates are occasionally lost or retired, the available pool only shrinks — making those that remain increasingly rare and valuable with each passing year.

No age restriction

Dateless plates carry no year identifier, so they can be assigned to any vehicle — new or classic. This universal compatibility means demand comes from every corner of the market, whether it is a brand-new sports car or a cherished vintage restoration.

Prestige & status

A short dateless plate is an unmistakable mark of distinction. Universally recognised as the pinnacle of the private plate world, cherished registrations signal taste, success and an appreciation for things that are genuinely exclusive.

2-character plates

The rarest of all — just a letter and number. Think 'A 1' or 'S 5'. Crown jewels of the plate world.

3-character plates

Short and sweet. Letter-number-letter or number-letter-number combinations with serious kerb appeal.

4-character plates

More accessible but still highly sought after. Perfect for initials, short names and memorable combinations.

Dateless plates

Any dateless format from the DVLA archive. Plates without year identifiers that suit any vehicle.

Are cherished plates a good investment?

The short answer is: historically, yes. Cherished number plates have consistently appreciated in value over the past four decades, often outperforming traditional investments like stocks, bonds and even property. The reason is straightforward economics — demand continues to grow while supply remains permanently fixed.

Consider the trajectory of some high-profile sales. The plate 25 O sold for over half a million pounds, while single-digit plates and short name combinations routinely fetch six figures at auction. Even more modest dateless plates — those in the £1,000 to £5,000 range — have typically doubled or tripled in value over 15 to 20 years. The key driver is that the DVLA will never issue new dateless registrations. Every plate in circulation today was created before 1963, and no more can ever be manufactured.

Of course, like any market, values can fluctuate in the short term. Economic downturns may temporarily soften demand at the top end. But the long-term trend for quality cherished plates has been remarkably consistent. Plates with clean, short formats and recognisable names or initials tend to hold their value best, because demand for these combinations is broad and enduring.

Unlike many collectibles, cherished plates are also practical. You can enjoy your investment every day on your vehicle, and there are no storage costs, insurance requirements or maintenance expenses. When you are ready to sell, the market is liquid and well-established. It is worth noting, however, that past performance does not guarantee future returns — always buy a plate you love first and consider any appreciation a welcome bonus.
